Fasting Blog – Day 20

This fast has me thinking about how many things I want to have control over in my life. Whether its people’s actions, the outcomes of a situation, my children’s decisions and truly the list could go on and on……… But this time has brought to me to a fresh awareness and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
In John 16 we see Jesus preparing the disciples for His death, burial and resurrection. Jesus says, “But now I am going away to the one who sent me” I am sure at this point that they had become so accustomed to being with Jesus on a daily basis, and what a security that created in them to walk by His side day by day. Can you imagine that no matter what they went through the greatest counselor was at their disposal all the time! If they ever had a bad day they didn’t have to search too far to get peace or understanding because Jesus was right there! Imagine after all that time Jesus saying to them I am leaving you, but hey don’t worry I am going to send someone greater, I can just seeing them saying what could be greater than this. Jesus you can’t possibly leave us, there are still so many things we don’t know how to handle, so many things we don’t know what to do!
But Jesus comforts them in this next part, John 16:7, “But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you! The Amplified Bible describes these characteristics about the Holy Spirit- Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, and Standby.
The next time you feel like you have to have it all figured out, or that you feel alone in need of comfort, advice, strength, a friend, or a helper…..The Holy Spirit is at your access. What a precious treasure that lives in you!
